(19.3 × 26.3 cm). Date: 1859.Whistler studied etching in London under the tutelage of his brother-in-law, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, a leader of the etching revival movement. While visiting Greenwich Park with Seymour Haden, Whistler made this image of a man from the nearby Royal Hospital for Seamen, a boarding house for ex-sailors. Brisk line work and careful shading depict sunlight flickering across the pensioner's shirt, hat, and wrinkled pant legs, immortalizing a passing moment. Focusing on the immediacy of the figure, Whistler eliminates the surrounding landscape, rejecting the conventional, picturesque details that Haden emphasized (compare to Haden's Sub Tegmine, 17.3.276). Artists participating in the etching revival sought to bring to the medium the expressive spontaneity admired in drawings. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
